INDUSTRIAL DISEASES
The HSE (Health & Safety Executive) lists a number of occupational complaints, conditions and ailments as Industrial Diseases. Matters traditionally regarded as work related such as asbestos cancers to more recently recognised occupational stress disorders are categorised as diseases of occupation.
Many people would immediately recognise, say, a reaction to exposure from noxious chemicals as being amongst the most serious of Industrial Disease matters. However, there are many more potentially innocuous scenarios that many of us come across regularly at work that can have long term effects on our health. Casual contact with oil or grease, without the proper protective equipment can sensitize a person to dermatitis for life. Dermatitis does not necessarily just affect the area of contact and can blight people’s lives over many years.
It is true that chemical fumes can cause serious damage to the respiratory, digestive and reproductive system, but some thing as simple as monotonous, repetitive hand and wrist movements can over time give rise to crippling upper limb symptoms.
Back disorders cost British Businesses Millions in lost time. They can also cost individuals affected their working futures. Most back problems are not caused by work, but slack health & safety making the situation worse and sometimes chronic.
